Position: Sales Rep / New Business Development (entry level)
Department: Sales - Electricity
Reports to: Director of Sales and Marketing

Company Summary BlueStar Energy Services, Inc. (BSE) is a retail electric supplier licensed in Illinois, Maryland, and Washington D.C. and ready to complete certification in New York and Michigan.  BSE serves some of the largest big-box retailers, national defense contractors, banks, and manufacturers in the country. BlueStar has doubled in size each year since incorporating, and following recent market and business developments the company is poised to continue its steady growth rate by expanding service territories and offerings.  BlueStar is one of the largest independent electric retailers (top 3) and ranks within the top 25 retail electric suppliers in the United States.

Position Overview This is an entry level sales position that will call on small to medium size business customers.  Prospects are contacted through a combination of cold calling (telephone) and/or canvassing (door-to-door).  Salary plus commissions and benefits.  A significant database of un-called leads is provided to new hires for prospecting.

Essential Functions (% of Time Allocated)
Lead Development (80%)

  • Lead Generation
    • Responsible for developing and maintaining a consistent incoming stream of prospective customers through a combination of intensive outbound calling and/or door to door sales
    • Build value and credibility associated with the BlueStar brand name.
  • Contact Management
    • Gather and verify all necessary contact information of decision maker(s) (DM’s) and enter it into BlueStar’s proprietary contact management system.
    • Talk with DM’s to gain knowledge and understanding of their current electric supply strategy and risk appetite.
  • Credit and Pricing
    • Gather necessary information to review customer creditworthiness.  Forward for internal review and approval/denial by operations department.
    • Gather and verify all necessary electric account information, desired product types, and contract terms required for BlueStar to quote a prospective customer.

Closing (20%)

  • Contract Negotiation
    • Present BlueStar’s standard contract language and review with DM’s prior to pricing presentation.  Explain terms and conditions and negotiate revisions as needed.
  • Pricing Presentation
    • Present BlueStar’s quote for electric service and explain the difference between BlueStar’s pricing and services compared to local utility or competitive suppliers.
  • Customer Website Demonstration
    • Walk customers through the BlueStar customer website to show them how to access usage history, payment history, previous bills issued, billing options, payment options, and more.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • This position requires an extremely motivated person, who is capable of handling rejection repeatedly to find a sale.  The account manager must be sensitive to corporate needs, customer needs, and our public image.
  • Strong self-direction, and having a results-oriented attitude and ability to manage frequently changing priorities are key.
  • Considerable knowledge or the ability and desire to learn sales psychology and closing techniques is a must.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills along with excellent interpersonal skills.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Must have at least one year of direct business sales experience, or proven sales track record.
2. Telecommunications or other utility experience is a plus.
3. College degree preferred but not required.

Compensation Base salary will vary based on experience + commissions and benefits, including health insurance through BlueCross & BlueShield of Illinois and 401K program.  First year income expected to be 50,000+ based on minimum performance standards.
