With BlueStar's help, Aurora is named Illinois' FIRST green power community
Illinois' second largest city continues to be a renewable energy leader after Aurora has been named the state's first Green Power Community by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Aurora took on the Green Power Challenge last summer with the EPA and BlueStar Energy, an independent Illinois-based energy solutions provider. The City accepted the Challenge to encourage residents and businesses to choose green power over traditional power for their electricity needs and to illustrate its commitment to environmental initiatives.
To become a Green Power Community, 2 percent of the power used by electricity customers needed to be classified as renewable energy, which translated into about 25.6 million kilowatt hours (kWh) annually for Aurora. Starting last May, residents, businesses and the City signed up for renewable energy totaling about 25.4 million kWh on an annual basis, with BlueStar Energy making an energy donation to the City to push the total above the goal.
